Spatial analysis of pollution and race

Jun 2016

I undertook a research project looking into how exposure to particulate matter affects the spatial distribution of the racial diversity of populations across Los Angeles.

Using R, I performed spatial analysis on data sourced from the U.S. government and environmental agencies. The process (documented in a Jupyter notebook) used probablistic methods, measures of spatial autocorrelation and interpolation, and performed correlation and regression analysis. The results proved there was a (weak) relationship between pollution and race, as exposure to dangerous levels of particulate matter was deemed to have an effect on a population’s diversity.
